HALLOWEEN – HISTORY AND TRADITIONS

Halloween began two thousand years ago in Ireland, England and some parts of Europe with religion of the Celts.

They celebrated their new year on the 1st of November. This day marked the beginning of the dark, cold winter.

The Celts believed that on the night before that, the 31st of October, ghosts of the dead returned to earth.

People were afraid of ghosts. They lit bonfires and didn’t leave homes at that night. Those who had to – dressed up like dead people to cheat the spirits.

When Christianity came to England, people no longer celebrated the new year on the 1st of November. This day was established by the Church as the holiday called
All Saints’ Day.

The 31st of October became the All Hallows’ Eve = „Halloween”
Hallow = święci
Eve = wigilia

When millions of Irish people immigrated to the USA, the tradition came with them.

Nowadays, on the 31st of October children in Britain, Ireland, Canada and the USA organise costume parties, dress up like ghosts, witches and vampires.

Trick-or-treating:
Children go in costumes from house to house, asking for treats such as candies, cookies, sweets, with the question, "Trick or treat?".
