Description of the class

Level: beginners
Students between ages 10-11: 17 boys, 13 girls.

The class takes place from 8:00 - 8:45 am on Monday. The students are very enthusiastic, they have to be kept busy not to disturb. They have completed approximately 30 lessons of English.

Recent work

  • Students have been studying "there is" and "there are" - general questions and negatives;
  • Writing sentences of students own like. "There is a man at the desk", "There is not a tree behind me?";
  • Asking questions "Is there my watch on your right hand?"

Objectives

  • To ask and answer questions like: "How many/much people/chalk are/is there?"
  • To study relevant words.
  • To prepare a description of the classroom.

Contents

Objective 1

(estimated time - 15 minutes)

a) Context

An exercise in which there are countable nouns with an exemplary question and uncountable nouns with their own example of the question.

b) Activity/class organization

The teacher reads words and the students repeat (they already know the words). Then the difference between "many" and "much" is explained. "How many?" and "How much?" questions follow and are answered by the students.

c) Aids:

Board, chalk, etc.

d) Language:

Some countable and uncountable nouns which have already been explained.

e) Possible problems:

Students don't know the difference between countable and uncountable nouns. The teacher is prepared for more explanation (a cassette, cassettes, air - some air).

Objective 2

(estimated time - 10 minutes)

a) Context:

Words about students' things. Words about the classroom.

b) Activity/class organization:

In pairs students have to put words (e.g. a calculator, a ruler, etc.) and the teacher has to write them all on the board. Then he has to add some more "class" words (e.g. a ceiling, a sill, etc.). The teacher assesses best situations.

c) Aids:

Wordlist/students' books/dictionaries.

d) Language:

Discussion language: "class" words.

e) Possible problems:

Students don't know any of the words. Maybe they know some of them. The teacher assesses the situation and is prepared for more explanation.

Objective 3

(estimated time- 20 minutes)

a) Context:

Class - What's there in the classroom?

b) Activity/class organization:

Students get into groups to describe their classroom in not less than 10 sentences. The teacher then asks the leader of each group to write one sentence of his group's own on the chalkboard. In this way the description of the class is ready. There are two or three students in every group. Students are then asked to write the description of their own room for homework.

c) Aids:

The board and notes about the class.

d) Language:

"Class" vocabulary

e) Possible problems:

The students might not remember all necessary prepositions of place. The teacher has to write them on the board (e.g. in front of, behind, next to, etc.)

Additional possibilities:

  • the teacher asks the students "How many/much?" questions about their desks and wants them to answer (e.g. There's only one book on my desk.)
  • the teacher draws a room on the chalkboard. There is some furniture in it - every piece of it has its name. Each student is to tell at least one sentence about it beginning with: "There is …"
