Peace on earth - is it possible?

Aims: By the end of the lesson students:
- Will have listened for the main idea of a text and for specific information
- Will have learned new vocabulary from the song
- Will have tried to express feelings which appear after listening to the song
- Will have made banners with some slogans against war
- Will have developed critical thinking skills (making inference, analysing)
- Will have developed independence and co-operative learning

Materials:
- Recording of the song ' Peace on Earth' by U2
- Copies of Cloze exercise 'Peace on Earth' by U2
- List of words from the song
- Cassette recorder, dictionaries

Stages of the lessons:

1.Warm up: Write PEACE ON EARTH in capital letters on the blackboard and encourage students to make as many words as they can from these words. Class divided into groups of 4- the group with more words wins. (5 min)

2.Tell Ls that they are going to work on a song today. Give out students the lists of words- their task is to find antonyms to these words (they can use dictionaries if they wish) . Ls are told that these words are taken from the song and try to guess what it is about. (4 min)

3.Give out song with gaps. Play the song once or twice, depending on Ls'needs. Ls fill in blanks while listening, then check the answers in pairs. (10 min.)

4.Teacher checks with learners answers to Cloze Exercise. (2 min)
Answer key to cloze exercise:

5. Students in the same groups of four try to think of one sentence describing in the best way the lyrics of the song. (5 min)

6. Discuss with the class how they feel after listening to the song, what emotions it woke. Discuss with them what are the effects of any war for an ordinary man. (8 min)

7.Learners in 4s.They think of some slogans to make anti-war banners. A group which makes the best banner will get a prize (marks).Students decide whose banners they like best and why.(8 min)

8.Give homework: Think of children who live in countries involved in war. Write what are 5 things they can't do and why. Would you miss these things?
