TOPIC: SOME ENGLISH IDIOMS
Level :pre-intermediate ( I used it with the 3graders at Junior High School)
Aims: students get to know the answers to questions like:
What is the idiom?
What are their Polish equivalents?
How to use them?
They also have the opportunity
- to work as a group and use their artistic talents,
-to be creative and imaginative
-to practise natural speaking
Materials: handouts , sheer sheets of paper (a 4) some markers, crayons etc(students can use everyting they have), material to divide student sinto pairs
Other comments: timing May vary, everything depend on you(the teacher) and your students’ pace of work, generalny students like the last part of the lesson the most, causa even weak students find something to do in the groups
1. First stage - (after checking the register, and giving the aim of the lesson ) is to ask the question what the idioms are. A teacher tries to elicit as much information about it as possibile. If they don’t have any suggestions , the teacher can give some ex ample sentences and later gather All of the information and create own definition of an idiom. 5 minutes should be enought for this task.
The short definition (from http://www.smart-words.org/quotes-sayings/idioms-meaning.html)
Idiom: an expression or wise saling/proverb wchich often has figurative meaning, sometomes hidden, these expressions are mainly used in spoken language
2 stage.Every student is given the handout with tasks to do. You can decide if they have to work in pairs or indivually. Give them 2-3 minutes to look at the idioms and think about the meaning of them. One more time gather information, suggestions, ideas with the whole group of sts. ( I helped my students by giving them hints, some additional questions etc.) Spare 10 minutes to do the task. The students have to be aware that they can’t translate idiomatic expressions literally. If you don’t want to use your native language, just explain what each idiom means.
3rd stage After the translation or explaining the meaning of the idioms, students have 5-8 minutes to put them (In a correct form)in the sentences. Be sure that students know what should be changed (declension, conjugation). Students work in pairs. (you can change the pairs – the simple idea how to divide them will be added). Check the answers with the class, correct the mistakes if they occur.
4 th Stage – speaking. Students create everyday dialogues in pairs( they have to contain some idiomatic expressions). They don’t have to write dialogues down. After few minutes, ask some pairs to present the dialogue chosen by them.
5th stage (as summing up). Sts work in groups of 3 or 4 and create rebuses for chosen( by them) idioms. They have to be sure that other groups don’t see their works. If sts work fast, you can ask them to create more rebuses. After few minutes (4-5) show the pictures and ask other groups about the idioms shown in the pictures.
Finally , if you still have some time, ask students about the idioms they liked the most.

The idea for dividing the class(if you prepare it once, you can use it as long as it is in good condition)
Sts like it and they get to know some information in this simple way
1. Think of any famous people (British, American, actors, scientists, e.g. David Becham, Isaac Newton, etc.)
2. Find the pictures of them (7 pairs – 7 famous people), print small pictures of them and cut out, fold up.
3. On separate pieces of paper write the names of these people and fold up.
4. Mix the pictures with the names, give students to draw lots
5. A student with a picture has to find a student a name of the person shown in the picture ( Sometimes I help sts to find their pair, especially if I changed the sets of pe ople)
