Lesson 1
‘Happy Birthday!’
Time: 45 minutes
Forms of activities: individual, pair, group working.
Objectives: talking about birthdays, presents, months of the year, identifying gifts, numbers 1-20.
Vocabulary: presents: a kite, a bike, a guitar, a skateboard, a doll, a car, a teddy bear, a ball, a watch, paints, a camera, a game, names of the months of the year
Reading: Reading a story for a specific information, understanding the global meaning.
Listening: listening for specific information.
Structures: the verb ‘to be’, ‘there is – there are’.
Communication: asking about age, the month of the birthday, When’s your birthday?, How old are you today?; giving and receiving gifts: This is for you, thank you; clarifying information, How many presents are there?
Project: making a birthday card for a friend .
Methods:
presentation
listening and reading of the texts
giving the answers yes or no for the questions concerning the text
talking in pairs
cooperative checking of the correctness of the exercises done by the students
cooperative filling the poster presenting the months of the year with the names of the students
learning of the song
watching a video concerning the learned topic
Materials: textbook ‘Welcome 1’ Elizabeth Gray, Virginia Evans, p. 24, 25, 28, 29; ‘Winners 1’ Cathy Lawday, Mark Hancock, p.18, flashcards and poster with the names of the months to fill in with the names of the students, ‘New Sparks, Teachers Resource Pack’, CD ‘Welcome a video ‘Happy Birthday’ Disney’s Magic English.

Modules of the lesson.

1. With the use of visual aids.

Part I Presentation
Flashcards with the names of presents are pin up together with the name of the thing presented. The teacher points to each flashcard, says the appropriate word, the students repeat chorally and individually the word. Then the names of the months are presented with the use of pictures given each student, they repeat after the teacher the names of the months and then the poster with the names of the months is cooperatively filled in with the names of the students to find out when each student celebrates birthday. The poster is put on the wall. After that students write down new words.
Part II Listening and reading
The students read two sentences, which they are going to answer yes or no after listening to the CD. The teacher checks the answers together with the whole class. After that the CD is played, the students listen and follow the lines simultaneously looking at the pictures added to the dialogues presenting the context of the situation. Then the students take roles to read the dialogue, the teacher check their pronunciation.
Part III Practice
The CD with the short dialogue is played, while the students follow the lines and look at the picture presenting the situation, next pupils repeat and act out the dialogue in pairs.
Then, the students listen to the CD and read birthday cards, which are introduced as an example to follow while doing their own cards as a homework. The teacher explain new structures and word, such as Dear Cindy, From, To, Best wishes on your birthday, With love to you etc. After that the students read the text of the song ‘Happy Birthday to you’ which is presented together with accompanying picture of the birthday party, and sing the song played with the CD. Next, they watch a short video “Happy Birthday’ concerning presented topic.
Part IV Homework
1. Learning of the vocabulary presented during the lesson.
2. Students are to make a birthday card for a friend using a material presented during the lesson and the technique they like best ( painting, sticking on, cutting out, printing on a computer etc.) The teacher makes a visual display of the students’ works.

3. No visual Aids


Part I Presentation
The teacher presents the new words, presents and names of the months, writing them down on the blackboard and giving Polish equivalents. The children repeat the words after the teacher chorally and individually and write them down.
Part II Listening and reading
The students read two sentences, which they are going to answer yes or no after listening to the CD. The teacher checks the answers together with the whole class. After that the CD is played, the children follow the lines of the dialogue. There is no pictures added to the text. Then the students take roles to read the dialogue, the teacher check their pronunciation.
Part III Practice
The CD with the short dialogue is played, while the students follow the lines, next pupils repeat and act out the dialogue in pairs.
Then, the students listen to the CD and read birthday cards, which are introduced as an example to follow while doing their own cards as a homework. However, the cards are not colorful, as it was in the lesson using visual aids. The teacher explain new structures and word, such as Dear Cindy, From, To, Best wishes on your birthday, With love to you etc. After that the students read the text of the song ‘Happy Birthday to you’ presented without any pictures and sing the song played with the CD. There is no video to watch.
Part IV Homework
1.Learning of the vocabulary presented during the lesson.
2.Students are to write wishes for a friend in their notebooks, they are not allowed to use any color or draw pictures.
